Richard W. Miller, a longtime leader in the Atlanta legal community and Practice Group Leader of Ballard Spahr’s Intellectual Property Litigation Group, has been named Managing Partner of the firm’s Atlanta office.
As Office Managing Partner, Mr. Miller works with the firm’s professional administrative staff and lawyers to position the Atlanta office and Atlanta-based professionals for success. He is also responsible for overall office operations. He takes over the role from Lawrence K. Nodine—literally a legend in the Atlanta intellectual property community.
“I can’t thank Larry enough for his dedication, service, and efforts to help keep the Atlanta office in a strong position during an extraordinarily difficult few years,” Mr. Miller said. “There is so much strength for Ballard Spahr to build on in Atlanta. I think the current climate creates a tremendous opportunity for us to grow strategically here in the business hub of the South.”
Ballard Spahr’s Atlanta office, with 30 lawyers, is a focal point for the firm’s renowned intellectual property practice, which offers a full range of services from patent prosecution and trademark clearance to strategic IP counseling and litigation. The Atlanta office is also home to attorneys skilled in banking, finance, financial services, corporate transactions, and business litigation.
Mr. Miller has practiced in Atlanta for more than 15 years, including more than a dozen years with Ballard Spahr. As Office Managing Partner, he also serves on the firm’s Expanded Board. He has handled scores of patent infringement cases in federal courts and in the International Trade Commission (ITC), and has argued appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He is recognized in the IAM Patent 1000 – The World’s Leading Patent Professionals, for excellence in patent litigation. Mr. Miller also has extensive experience litigating copyright, trademark, trade dress, and trade secret cases both in the courts and in private arbitration proceedings. Beyond litigation, he provides Ballard’s clients with the full range of intellectual property counseling services.
Among his many leadership external positions, Mr. Miller has served as Chair of the Intellectual Property Section of the Georgia Bar Association and is an officer of the Atlanta Intellectual Property Inn of Court.
“Rich is an outstanding lawyer and leader, with a deep commitment to Ballard Spahr, our Atlanta office, and the people who work there,” firm Chair Mark Stewart said. “In addition to the exceptional respect he has earned within the firm, Rich has the outstanding external reputation that will serve the firm well as we work to make our Atlanta presence even stronger.”
