Nathan E. Seiler—co-leader of Ballard Spahr’s Emerging Growth and Venture Capital Group and former Managing Partner of its Boulder office—has been named Chair of the firm’s Business and Transactions Department, effective July 1, 2022, firm Chair Mark Stewart announced.
With deal values exceeding $10 billion last year alone, Ballard Spahr’s 120-lawyer Business and Transactions Department has developed a national reputation, serving clients ranging from innovative start-ups to Fortune 100 companies, many of which have been with the firm since their very beginnings.
Mr. Seiler’s sophisticated practice and leadership experience have well prepared him to lead the Department in a very challenging economic and regulatory climate. The Department’s focus will remain on helping clients across industries and corporate life cycles to most effectively structure and execute their business initiatives within increasingly complex legal, financial, and regulatory parameters.
Mr. Seiler advises companies and investors in corporate and securities transactions, including venture capital and private equity financings, mergers and acquisitions, public and private securities offerings, securities compliance, and general corporate counseling. He works with clients in a variety of industries, including software, biotechnology, medical devices, healthtech, Fintech, natural and organic products, clean technologies, and renewable energy.
“Our transactional practices have experienced phenomenal growth over the last several years, giving us the diversity of practice strength and industry experience to help clients through evolving market conditions,” Mr. Seiler said. “We will continue to bring on talented deal lawyers who share our core values and entrepreneurial spirit and whose industry experience will benefit clients. It’s an exciting time to be here, and I’m looking forward to this next chapter.”
Mr. Seiler succeeds Peter V. Michaud, who becomes Chair of the firm on January 1, 2024.
“Nathan is a talented corporate and finance lawyer and shares Pete’s focus on the strategic growth of the transactional practices across the firm,” Mr. Stewart said. “I have every confidence that the Department’s strong performance will continue under Nathan’s guidance.”
Damon O. Barry, Office Managing Partner of Ballard Spahr’s Denver location, will become Managing Partner of the office in Boulder as well. An M&A and government affairs Partner, Mr. Barry advises buyers and sellers in mergers and acquisitions, recapitalizations, and commercial transactions.
