Amy M. McClain, Chair of Ballard Spahr’s Real Estate Department, and Brian D. Huben, Managing Partner of the firm’s Los Angeles office, have been inducted as Fellows of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers (ACREL), a premier professional organization of U.S. real estate attorneys.
Ms. McClain and Mr. Huben are among the ACREL Class of 2022 Fellows inducted during the organization's annual mid-year conference recently in Amelia Island, Florida.
Admission to ACREL is by invitation only after a rigorous screening process. The organization's distinguished, nationally known lawyers have been elected to fellowship based on their outstanding legal ability, experience, contributions to the profession, and high standards of professional and ethical conduct in the practice of real estate law.
Ms. McClain focuses on guiding mixed-finance housing development transactions with an emphasis on affordable housing. Based in Ballard Spahr’s Baltimore office, Ms. McClain is the first woman to serve as Chair of the firm’s Real Estate Department, a national leader with more than 110 attorneys in offices across the country.
Mr. Huben focuses on representing commercial landlords and shopping center owners, managers, and developers in litigation in state and federal courts, and advises on operational matters. He represents many landlords as creditors in some of the nation’s largest retailer bankruptcies.
ACREL presents continuing educational and networking events, creates and distributes publications on legal topics, plans and executes public service projects, and bestows awards for outstanding service to the organization, profession, and public.
Ballard Spahr is one of the most active firms within ACREL, with a history of membership, service, and leadership within the organization. Raymond G. Truitt, a real estate partner in the Baltimore office, serves as the organization’s Secretary, and Tina R. Makoulian, a real estate partner in Philadelphia, serves on the ACREL Board of Governors. Three Ballard Spahr attorneys have served as ACREL President: Partner Roger D. Winston, leader of the firm’s Mixed-Use, Condominium, and Multifamily Development practice; retired Partner Morton Fisher, Jr.; and the late Richard R. Goldberg, a partner who also received ACREL's lifetime achievement award and highest honor, the Frederick S. Lane Award.
