Ballard Spahr ranked first among 37 Philadelphia-area firms in the Philadelphia Business Journal’s most recent list of law firms that contributed the most pro bono hours.
To compile its ranking, the Philadelphia Business Journal conducted a January 2021 survey of law firms regarding the hours donated in 2019 to pro bono work. Together, attorneys in Ballard Spahr’s Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Delaware offices contributed 23,133 pro bono hours, almost 2,000 more hours than the second-place firm.
“Throughout our 15 offices, Ballard Spahr attorneys routinely and consistently demonstrate support for important causes that better their communities,” said Ballard Spahr Pro Bono Counsel Lisa B. Swaminathan. “The need to improve access to justice and advocate on behalf of those in need of legal services remains, but this is a positive indicator that Ballard Spahr is working to be part of the solution.”
Firm-wide, the attorneys of Ballard Spahr contribute more than 50,000 hours annually to pro bono service. In our pro bono work, Ballard Spahr lawyers advocate for fundamental human rights in cases involving the death penalty, voting rights, asylum and immigration, and child advocacy; help veterans and first-responders with estate planning through Wills for Heroes; staff legal clinics for unhoused people; assist artists in protecting their intellectual property; advise entrepreneurs on building successful businesses; and represent low-income individuals and families in a full spectrum of matters.
