Calling Ballard Spahr “a firm with a true commitment to pro bono and access to justice,” the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada (LACSN) has named the firm its 2022 Law Firm of the Year and the recipient of its Lied Award for Most Pro Bono Hours by a Law Firm.
In 2022, Ballard Spahr’s Las Vegas attorneys contributed the most pro bono hours by a Las Vegas law firm through several LACSN programs, including the Nevada Supreme Court Appellate program, the Federal Pro Bono program, the Children’s Attorneys Project, and the Ask a Lawyer program. The Las Vegas office also won LASCN’s award for most pro bono hours contributed overall, through LACSN programs or otherwise.
LACSN is a nonprofit that helps low-income individuals and families who face critical legal problems that affect their basic needs. Its Pro Bono Project coordinates private attorneys who provide free legal assistance to people who cannot afford counsel.
Overall, Ballard Spahr Las Vegas attorneys have contributed almost 1,000 hours of pro bono representation in 2022—for LACSN as well as for other pro bono initiatives. That averages to 61.6 hours per lawyer.
“No client, in Nevada or elsewhere, should have to do without legal representation because of an inability to pay,” said firm-wide Pro Bono Counsel Lisa B. Swaminathan. “We’re proud of the work we’ve done with LACSN, and we look forward to continuing to help deliver on its mission of providing quality legal counsel, advice, and representation to individuals who need help protecting their rights.”

Across the firm’s 15 offices nationwide, Ballard Spahr attorneys contribute more than 50,000 hours annually to pro bono service, ensuring that clients have a voice and a legal advocate regardless of their ability to pay. In addition to providing pro bono services directly to clients, the firm partners with agencies throughout the country to bring free legal services to meet the most pressing needs of our communities. Ballard Spahr attorneys advocate for fundamental human rights in cases involving the death penalty, voting rights, asylum and immigration, and child advocacy; help veterans and first-responders with estate planning through Wills for Heroes; staff legal clinics for unhoused people; assist artists in protecting their intellectual property; advise entrepreneurs on building successful businesses; and represent low-income individuals and families in a full spectrum of matters.
