Law360 has named the Project Finance Group at Ballard Spahr a national "Practice Group of the Year,” an honor that recognizes law firm practices that worked on the biggest and most important projects and transactions in 2021.
Law360, a leading source of national and international legal news, selected Practice Groups of the Year to highlight the top U.S. practices in 39 areas of legal focus, “with an eye toward landmark matters and general excellence.” Ballard Spahr's Project Finance practice, within the firm’s national Finance Department, is one of only five nationwide named for the project finance category.
“Our practice was really humming in 2021, and 2022 is shaping up to be even better,” said Patrick Gillard, co-leader of Ballard Spahr’s Project Finance Group. “With increased federal investment to help address critical needs across so many areas of social infrastructure—health care, housing, renewable energy, broadband, the list goes on—market conditions are right for our clients, and we’re excited to be helping them succeed.”
Ballard Spahr’s project finance lawyers handled more than $10 billion in project financings in 2021. Project types handled by the firm run the gamut: bioenergy, renewable energy, transportation hubs, affordable housing and urban/community development, hospitals, universities, agribusiness, and public infrastructure projects. Highlighted projects include: the world’s first trash-to-fuel plant, in Nevada; redevelopment of 30th Street Station in Philadelphia; a first-of-its-kind plastics recycling plant in Ohio; a sustainable lithium supply agreement for electric-vehicle battery makers; and large-scale efficiency upgrades for energy generation at a university in Idaho.
Project Finance Group attorneys take an integrated approach to transactions, counseling clients on the regulatory issues, financing options, transactional considerations, and litigation avoidance strategies necessary when embarking on a capital-heavy project. Unlike most large law firms, Ballard Spahr regularly represents clients on every side of a transaction—borrowers, investors, underwriters, developers, purchasers, and trustees.
Said Steve T. Park, Group co-leader, “This recognition underscores our position as a national leader in an important area of law, business, and community advancement. We’re proud to work with clients whose work is changing the national landscape and improving the everyday lives of so many people. It’s really exciting.”
