Charlie Stillman Honored with New York Law Journal's Lifetime Achievement Award

June 20, 2019

Ballard Spahr litigator Charles A. Stillman, an internationally renowned white-collar defense attorney who has worked on some of country's most high-profile legal matters during his nearly 60-year career, will be honored with the New York Law Journal's 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes lawyers in the New York City region who have made exceptional contributions to the legal community and practice of law over the course of a career. Winners will be recognized in the New York Law Journal's upcoming Professional Excellence magazine and honored at the New York Legal Awards event on October 23.

Mr. Stillman has represented public figures, political leaders, and Fortune 500 corporations and executives in a range of high-stakes litigation and investigations. He joined Ballard Spahr in 2013 when his litigation boutique Stillman & Friedman, P.C., which Mr. Stillman co-founded in 1977 with Julian Friedman, merged with the firm.

"Charlie is widely regarded by his clients and peers as one of the finest litigators in the country," said Marjorie J. Peerce, co-Managing Partner of Ballard Spahr's New York office. "This honor recognizes not only Charlie's exceptional legal accomplishments, but also his dedicated mentorship of other lawyers. He is an accomplished attorney, a trusted colleague, a role model, and a great friend."

Mr. Stillman started his career as a law clerk to the Honorable Irving R. Kaufman—both in the Southern District of New York and in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. He later joined the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District. During his tenure, under U.S. Attorney Robert Morgenthau, Mr. Stillman conducted numerous trials, including major tax and securities fraud prosecutions, and argued many cases before the Second Circuit.

The New York Law Journal is not the first to recognize Mr. Stillman's accomplishments. Since 2015, he has been named a "Senior Statesman" by Chambers USA for litigation: white collar crime and government investigations in New York. He has also been honored twice by the Anti-Defamation League with the Human Relations Award in 1993 and the Founder's Award in 2014.

"Charlie has left an indelible mark on the New York legal community and on the practice of law," said New York office co-Managing Partner Denise L. Plunkett. "As a community of professionals, we are all better thanks to the contributions he has made so tirelessly over a half-century of service."
