The award-winning documentary centers on a gentrifying Denver neighborhood, examining urban development, policing, and gang activity in the community.

What happens when days before a documentary is scheduled to premiere at a film festival, the producer and his production team are served with a defamation lawsuit seeking to block release of the film?

Join us at the ASU California Center as ASU Professor of Practice, award-winning director and producer Peter Byck, moderates a panel discussion about the making of the award-winning documentary The Holly, A Documentary Film by Julian Rubinstein. Julian Rubinstein and his IP litigation attorney, Robert Gutierrez of Ballard Spahr, discuss the process of assembling a cast to be interviewed on film, security concerns, and legal issues before and after release of the documentary, and recount first-hand what happened behind the scenes of the widely acclaimed documentary.

Nonny de la Peña, Program Director of ASU’s Los Angeles-based Center for Narrative and Emerging Media, a joint undertaking by The Sidney Poitier New American Film School, in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication shares her insights as a Peabody Award-winning writer, director and producer in virtual, augmented and extended reality, film, print and television.

Together, the panel will exchange views and experiences discussing how the deep knowledge of immersive story telling has a way to empower new voices to share stories.
