Bankruptcy Attorney Joel Newell Joins Ballard Spahr in Phoenix

July 17, 2024

Joel F. Newell—a litigator with almost two decades of experience in bankruptcy and creditors’ rights—has joined Ballard Spahr’s Litigation Department and Bankruptcy and Restructuring Group as of counsel, firm Chair Peter V. Michaud announced today. Joel is resident in the firm’s Phoenix office.

“Joel is a skilled litigator with a depth of experience in bankruptcy matters that we need in the Southwest,” said Bankruptcy and Restructuring Practice Leader Matthew G. Summers. “He adds further strength to our bankruptcy capabilities in Arizona and on the West Coast, and our clients will appreciate having him here as much we do.”

Joel represents creditors and other parties in interest in complex bankruptcy and restructuring matters. He has experience with complex Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings as well as receiverships, workouts, and commercial litigation, primarily in the areas of distressed real estate and other distressed assets and the retail, restaurant, and hospitality industries. At Ballard Spahr, he will handle matters involving secured lending, commercial landlord-tenant issues, and unsecured creditors. Joel, who is licensed to practice in Texas as well as Arizona, will work alongside Bankruptcy and Restructuring Partners Craig Solomon Ganz and Michael S. Myers.

“Joining Ballard is a welcome opportunity to continue to deepen my practice alongside some of the finest bankruptcy attorneys practicing today,” Joel said. “I know that becoming part of this firm is a great opportunity, and I’m looking forward to getting to work.”
