Joseph A. Kanefield, Practice Leader of Ballard Spahr's Political and Election Law Group, was named "Best Capitol/Political Lawyer" by the Arizona Capitol Times at the 2017 Best of the Capitol Awards. His over 20 years of experience working with all three branches of the Arizona state government have made him "one of the most sought-out political lawyers in the state," the newspaper wrote in a profile published in the June 30 issue.

"Few lawyers know how Arizona state government works better than Joe Kanefield," Times editors wrote. Based in Phoenix, the publication is one of the state's leading sources of Arizona political and governmental news. In addition, Ballard Spahr was nominated in the category for "Best Lobbying Firm," and Scott A. Smith, Managing Director of Government Relations, was nominated in the "Best Lobbyist – Male" category.

Mr. Kanefield is a litigator whose government-centric practice focuses on election and campaign finance law, constitutional law, civil and appellate litigation, government relations, public-private partnerships, procurement, administrative law, gaming, consumer, and state and local tax matters. Prior to joining the firm, he served as General Counsel to Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, advising her and the State of Arizona on litigation involving the state budget, civil rights, immigration, gaming, and health care issues.

Ballard Spahr extends its congratulations to Mr. Kanefield. We are proud of his work and dedication to his clients, and we are delighted to see him so warmly recognized by his peers.
